Is Your Excuse Bigger Than Your Dream?

Be Serious with Your Dreams
I have attended a personal finance assembly when the speaker (who happens to be one of my mentors) told us this story. Well, he was actually the young and successful man in the story:

A young and successful business coach is having a discussion with a young woman who works as an accountant in a local accounting firm.

The woman kept complaining about her busy schedule while gorgeously reciting all her excuses in life.

She can't do this, she can't do that, Bill Gates was just lucky to have founded Microsoft, the guys on the other table don't pay taxes, etc. The young man listened to every word the woman had to tell him. Well those complaints were actually music to his ears.

Why not? He already heard them many times, from many different people.

Every. Single. Day.

Finally, when the woman was done with her impromptu speech about life and how bigger her excuses are than her dreams, the man spoke in profound wisdom:

Man: Seryoso ka ba sa pangarap mo?
(Are you serious with your dreams?)

Woman:
Oo naman?! (Of course!)

Man:
Alam mo hindi ako naniniwala. (I don't believe you.)

Suddenly, the woman's pretty face turned red! She was angered and looked provoked by the reply she just heard...

Woman:
Pa'no mo naman nasabi 'yan?? (How could you say that??)

Man:
Nakikita mo ba na sa ginagawa mo ngayon, let's say 5 years from now, matutupad
mo 'yung mga pangarap mo?
(Do you see yourself reaching your dreams by doing what you do five years from now?)

She giggled and swiftly replied with a soft tone...

Woman: Hindi. (No.)

Man:
That already proves the point na hindi ka pa seryoso sa pangarap mo. Kasi kung seryoso ka sa pangarap mo at alam mo na hindi mo naman makukuha 'to sa ginagawa mo ngayon, bakit ka pa nandyan? (Then that already proves the point that you're not yet serious with your dreams. Because if you're serious and you already know that you can't fulfill them by doing what you do now, why are you still there?)

- o0o -

If you think the idea was for the woman to resign from her job, you're wrong.

The man was simply telling her to do something outside her job. Either pursue a passion or start a side business. But did you get the lesson the young man was trying to tell the woman?

I've actually paid a sum to hear this story and figure out in my mind to get the lesson myself. The thought was actually quite simple, and I'll be telling it to you out of generosity -- FOR FREE!!

Are you ready?

Here it goes:

Working just to survive is different with working to fulfill your dreams.
