Benefitting from Your Credit Card Points

If you’re thinking of getting a credit card, one of your considerations for doing so may be for the simple convenience of not having to carry large amounts of cash with you when you plan on doing some shopping.

Another consideration you should have is for the rewards points program.

Nearly all of the cards from banks and other financial institutions have a rewards program in one form or another. If you’ve got a credit card, you should be benefitting from your credit card points already. If you aren’t, here’s how you can get started.

What are rewards programs?

Rewards programs that exist for credit cards usually mean a set of items or services that you can trade in points for. These points are earned through purchases made using your card, though some may have very specific requirements to trigger, and here are some of them.
Air Miles are points earned from purchasing airline tickets. There are cards that allow for air miles to be earned with other purchases as well, and the points are normally automatically credited. These points can also be used for other services related to travel, such as hotel and taxi services, concierge service, etc.
Reward Points from general purchases like groceries and dining out can also gather points of the general variety, which can be exchanged for freebies. Some cards also double up on reward points for spends made abroad, or for specific items. Another form of reward points can come from charges made at fuel stations. These points are a little more specific, and accumulated amounts can be exchanged for free fuel or discounts on services.
The general rule for reward points is that they can be redeemed against a variety of gifts from the provider’s catalogue, or for gift checks or rebates.

The advantage

Some things you’ll want to keep in mind when it comes to your credit card’s reward points are that they never expire, or if they do, their shelf life is incredibly long. Spends towards certain categories, or the purchase from promotional offers can earn you extra, sometimes double, the rewards.
You can also opt to exchange accumulated points for cashbacks that can be funneled into your card’s current balance, meaning that you’ll pay less on your next due date.

Benefitting from your rewards points

The best way to benefit from your rewards points is to always keep track of promotions that might be currently ongoing. This is normally found on the bank’s website, or the fine print in your monthly statement. If your points have an expiration date, it’s important to make a note of these expiration dates as well, which you can get from your provider’s customer service or your billing statement.

Final thoughts

Maximizing your credit card rewards points means knowing when to use them, and what to use them for. It’s also important to note whether or not your rewards points can be claimed instantly or require a different form of initialization in order to be used.
Understanding the mode of redemption will help you maximize these points to your advantage.
