Why You Should NOT Join an MLM Company

Why You Should NOT Join an MLM CompanyMany people, especially those who were either uninformed or misinformed, would argue that they know a lot of people who tried and failed miserably in this thing called networking.

“Nothing happened!” “Good for you, but I think it's not for me!” and “I just wasted my money, time and efforts!” were the most common, if not abused phrases.

But what they don't realize is that there are much more people that they don't know - and are actually doing great, if not successful!

But we can't blame them. Either they were scammed or were fooled to do or pay for something that they did not truly understood. In some cases, they were hyped by all these quick-rich promises that their sponsors made just to have them say “Yes!” Unfortunately, after the hype and excitement were gone, they were easily replaced by fear and doubts. Most people quit on this stage, as not everyone are mentally prepared to deal with a roller coaster of emotions. And so they quit without trying and stop without starting.

Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba Group, best sums it up: “As an entrepreneur, today is very difficult. Tomorrow is even more difficult. But the day after tomorrow is very beautiful. Most people die tomorrow evening.”

If you're thinking about joining any MLM business soon, please, think carefully first. Ask yourself, “Are you ready for this?” Just be cautious about not to over-think or over-analyze. Sometimes, over-thinking and over-analyzing takes away our common sense. If the company is legitimate, the products are great and the system is not flawed, then there's only one factor left you need to consider: yourself. A famous author once said, You don't have to be great to start, you just have to start to be great!”

Most network marketers believe and would tell you that, “MLM is for everyone.” That's a BIG lie! Because not everyone can endure the struggle, the pain and all the hardships that might, could and would come along your journey to become successful in this field.

But before moving on, let me just make one thing very clear: if a company shows any signs of illegality, such as use of pyramiding scheme or selling so-so products just to brand themselves legit, you should automatically stay away from them! If you're still lost as to how to determine if an MLM company is good or not, please read my guide about the 5 Questions you need to ask in every MLM company.

Why you should NOT join an MLM company and do network marketing

1. Your ego will be at stake
You want to earn big and be successful, sure, but are you willing to pay the price? If you're a person who holds a degree (or any position that would merit an elite status), are you crazy enough to listen to a 21-year old guy or someone who never finished college to teach you how to earn your first MLM commission?

I might be stating the obvious, but that's what MLM is - a fair level of battleground where everyone starts from zero and has an equal chance to make it big!

It's a far cry from the corporate world that we used to know - where only few and limited positions are allotted for the best, if not oldest employees.

You will be ignored, rejected (a lot) and belittled by people, including those you thought were your friends! People would laugh at you and your dreams. You may even lose some of your dear friends! The craziest part? The first people you thought who'd support you would be the first ones to turn their backs at you.

Should success be really that costly? Here's another excellent insight from Jack Ma:
When selling to close friends and family, no matter how much you're selling to them, they will always feel you're earning their money, no matter how cheap you sell to them, they still wouldn't appreciate it.
There will always be people who do not care about your Costs, Time and Effort. They rather let other people cheat them, allowing others to earn, than supporting someone they know. 'Cause in their heart, they will always be thinking, 'How much did he earn from me?' instead of 'How much did he save/make for me?'

When doing sales, the first people who will trust you will be strangers, friends will be shielding against you, fair-weather friends will distance from you. Family will look down upon you

The day you finally succeeded, paying the bill for every get-together dinner, entertainment, you will realize: everyone else is present except the strangers.
Yes, it might be that costly. But what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?

2. You might will talk/sell to people
Yes, you will need to talk to people. You need to sell something to someone. Hopefully, you already knew by now - that there is no such thing as quick-rich or easy money! If you see things like these, kindly spare yourself from the trouble:
  • No Selling! (Walang benta-benta!)
  • No Recruiting (Walang recruit-recruit!)
  • No Nothing (Walang gagawin, pero kikita yayaman ka! Luh?!)
Do not dignify these malicious posts by naively asking, “How?”. Even proven ways to make you financially secured (at least in the future) such as investing in stocks or mutual funds would require time and effort (aside from the money, of course!) for you to study, learn and monitor in order to really make money!

So imagine an offer where they promise to almost double your money in just a few days while doing completely nothing. How do you think they plan to pay you? Do they have existing businesses that are so profitable they want to just give away their earnings?

Not even a single million-peso company like Jollibee or PLDT would do that (well, they give dividends to their shareholders, but that's another story).

The answer of course is that they would pay you using the money they get from the people who would eventually join you in your so-called business. So let me tell you again, that a legitimate MLM company would require YOU to sell their products or services for you to really earn. In that case, yes, you need to talk to people - both online and personal - to sell not just your product or services, BUT your dreams and vision as well!

A legit MLM company's earnings should be based on product sales and NOT on the number of people who join the business.

3. You might grow
As in any business, you first need to learn before you can earn. Trainings (and I mean a lot) are part of the MLM culture. From 'how to sell' to 'how to handle this and that' to 'how to really, really earn', they got you covered! So if learning new things that might empower and add value to you (which hopefully makes you a better person) is not your thing, run!

4. You might lead
Network marketing is also about leverage. You can't do it alone - you need the help from other people. But that's the beauty of this industry - the more people you help, the more people will help you become successful. But if you can't even lead yourself or change your negative perspective in life, then don't dream of leading a pack full of dreamers! Because what they need is a genuine leader who would help them realize and fulfill their dreams, not steal them. Any organization is always in danger when those who have never learned to obey are given the right to command.

If you hate possibly seeing a day in your life when you no longer have a boss that tells you what to do, you better stay away from network-marketing.

5. You might get your dreams
If you're the type of person who fears the subject of money and your own dreams, MLM may not be a good thing for you. Maybe you should stick with what you do. Because if you really worked seriously and consistently hard on your business, it's just a matter of time before it starts paying you generously. Before you know it, you're standing in front of your dream board or bucket list and starts putting a check in an item, one by one. So if you feel damned about going back to your once-achievable-now-turned-impossible dreams and giving back any signs of hope to them, then really, network-marketing is not for you. Sorry.

Nothing worth having comes easy.

Do you want to make serious money? Then be ready to put some put some serious work. Because unlike in the office, your income in network-marketing is directly proportional to your efforts. And that's precisely why people quit on year 3, year 2, year 1 or even just months upon starting!

They focus on their efforts rather than their growth. And they measure growth by income even if they've just started! It's not magic. It doesn't happen overnight. It's like planting a mango tree - that takes years before it gives you something regularly, not a bean sprout that although it only takes days to be useful, everything ends from there. But not everyone appreciate this process. That's why people quit, maybe not on their dreams, but on their business.

The ironic thing is that people aren't willing to work on their business for a few number of years but are willing to work for more than 30 years on a job they mostly hate, knowing that they won't get their life-long dreams fulfilled there. (If this statement hurt you, I hope it did. Do something.)

Few worthwhile things in life come quickly. There is no such thing as instant success or instant growth. We are used to instant noodles, instant coffee and microwave popcorn. But getting our dreams doesn't happen overnight. Microwave  success don't have staying power. Significant success takes time, but is worth all the hard work and sacrifices combined. ~ John Maxwell, paraphrased

  4. This might be true, but not entirely. If you have a job, you have a steady source of income. MLM on the other hand, if you cant sell or you dont have enough of customer to sell your products with, then you are broke, hungry, and probably in debt for paying your bills. MLM is not for everyone. Before you join which you need to invest a few thousands to tens of thousands of pesos first (that you probably at some point borrowed), you should have atleast a plan on how you can earn properly. Well, i guess doing mlm while having a job is better. But then again, i would like to say that if you wanted to be successful in mlm you better be that kind if persob who has the ability to sales talk, which many people dont have. And of course, you should not forced your friends into joining and putting your friendship as a deciding factor. Many an mlm people i know do this, theyre so hard into selling that theh can only see their friends as a money symbol. Like if the friends dont buy or join, their friendships end.

  5. Three years late to make a comment but these up to now are all true. You made really good points as far as why MLM isn't worth the time and to add in to that, i think what makes it worse is its unfair system.
