6 Ways to Decrease Your Electricity Bill

A number of appliances in the Philippines like televisions may be affordable; but the electricity costs they can generate sometimes are just too expensive for a regular Filipino family.

This is especially true in the latter part of the year because the holidays are coming up. Everyone in the household must contribute in bringing down the electricity costs by following simple everyday practices.

1. Turn off your TV
These days, it is very hard not to watch TV because there are several good content you can watch at your own leisure. This is thanks to various streaming services like Netflix. But as much as possible, avoid leaving your TV on as background noise when you are doing something else. Remember that you have to conserve energy well so make sure to also unplug it when you aren’t using it.

2. Opt for electric fans
Electric fans are more cost efficient compared to using air conditioners. Encourage all your family members to use it instead of turning your AC on. Ensure that the blades in your fan are cleaned frequently so it can run smoothly.

Open your windows as well to let cool air come into your house. The monsoon or typhoon season has officially started. The year is also almost close to a finish as well. This means that the months will slowly go cooler.

3. Use sunlight during the day
The Philippines does not have an official Daylight Saving Time (DST), wherein people are encouraged to make better use of the sun’s light. But this should not stop you from saving energy by opting to use daylight instead of light fixtures. Don’t close your curtains so you can let the warm sunshine into your homes to brighten it.

Remember to dust off your lights from time to time so it doesn’t look dim when you need to turn them on.

4. Air-dry your laundry
Always air-dry your laundry as much as possible–particularly when the sun is out. Check your mobile phone’s weather app or the internet if it is going to rain outside. If you believe that it will rain on your laundry day, then you can use your dryer. But be sure that you have a full load while being careful not to overload it. Overloading your machine may cause damage to some of its parts. Also, make an effort to dry similar clothes together to conserve time and energy.

5. Clean your AC’s filter
Cleaning the filter in your air conditioner can make a vast difference. Dirty filters can result into your AC to run longer as well as restrict its airflow. Schedule to have them cleaned every one or two week(s). Contact the maintenance company if you need further assistance on the matter.

Be sure to close all windows and doors before you turn on your AC, so you don’t waste any energy and money.

6. Fill your refrigerator with the right amount of food
Reduce the amount of energy your refrigerator is consuming by filling it with just the right number of food. Too much content can make your appliance generate more power in ensuring the food inside is kept cool.

If you want to further decrease your electric bill, move it one to two inch away from the wall so that its motor can have proper ventilation and is not overworked. Apply these simple practices every day and watch the cost of your electricity bill decrease over time.
